York, York

Last month a friend told me that she'd never live in New York city again.  I was taken aback by her declaration.  It was frank without any of the rank odor of pretension.  There was a simplicity in her statement that made it sound as if she were swearing off roller coasters or Tom Clancy novels.  Without so much as a deep breath she had evicted New York from the center of her world and then proceeded to take another bite of her salad.

I on the other hand have been recommitting myself to New York during this past year.  Getting myself reacquainted to being here, waking up and smelling its morning breath, and falling asleep amidst its storing, like a newlywed getting acquainted with the rhythms of marriage after a decade of courtship.  Except, it's been longer than a decade, New York and I have been in a relationship for twenty-seven years, sure we took five years off--but there was very little doubt that I wasn't coming back into the fold.

Marriage is too overused a framework.

While I can not quite put my finger on a reason why---but I for some reason feel moments away for calling for a ballot amendment declaring that until something legitimately new comes out of it New York be renamed York.

Let me guess, you think this crazy?

If you do, please remind me what's new again in this city?

at first, i thought you were sounding like carrie bradshaw. which is ok. her voice is on loop for the thousands, the millions, of dreamers and denizens in and on their way to that fair city. then i thought "talk stories." read jamaica kincaid's collection of talk of the town stories she wrote during the 70s and 80s. she was the original carrie bradshaw, the DIY, immigrant carrie bradshaw. colouring her hair blond? ducking her landlord cause she didnt have the $40 in rent but yet still making it to receptions with the kissingers, press conferences with chris evert (who at that time was a -lloyd) and interviewing orianna fallaci? i cant think of a better book i love more about new york than kincaid's talk stories. i know, big claim, but i love jamaica.
