TEVIN CAMPBELL- “CAN WE TALK”

Now that I teach high school students I can’t help but laugh when I hear the boys pew-pooing today’s heartthrobs. It’s not so much their displays of teenage machismo that I find amusing but how vividly they remind me of how my friends and I used to rail on the young artists our classmates used to crush on. These moments are just another reminder that the more things change the more they stay the same. All this to say I apologize for every cross word I ever uttered toward Tevin Campbell circa 1988-1994.

Bruce Springsteen – Born To Run

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
Its a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while were young
`cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Pepperseed Riddim

The more I think back to the 90s the more surreal that period seems.  For example, my college GPA might have been a few points higher had I not spent so much time trying to master this dance.  Then again, it was not just a dance.  It was  more than just another addition to my life’s soundtrack. The pepperseed was a movement. For a brief moment in time I could’ve sworn that my entire world revolved around this riddim.  How I ever managed to escape its grasp and get back to reality, I’ll never know.
